Nominations Are Open for the Alumni Council

This post includes information about this year’s council elections, and a proposed change to the MCAA bylaws that Association members will vote on in November.

Nominations are now open!

This year, we have six seats to fill on the nine-member council. Know someone you think would bring energy, ideas, and commitment to the MCAA?

Submit Nomination Here!

Self-nominations are encouraged!

Serving on the council is an opportunity to help shape everything the MCAA does. Council members don’t just attend meetings: if there is something you would like to see the Association do—reunion and other gatherings, host alumni seminars, create publications, foster collaborations with other organizations, or something that hasn’t been done yet—the council is a place to help make it happen.

Council members should expect to commit roughly five hours a month to meetings and Association committee work on projects. New terms begin in January, with an orientation for incoming members in early January.

Nominations will be open through Friday, October 23. Nominees will be contacted after nominations close and given the opportunity to accept or decline. Those who choose to run will be asked to provide a photo and some information about themselves to share with Association members before voting begins.

Proposed Bylaw Change

Two years ago, Association members voted to change the bylaws so that council elections take place every other year, rather than annually. Because council terms had previously been staggered around annual elections, that change created a mismatch between the election schedule and the terms of council members. This is part of the reason we have six seats to fill this year.

In July, the Council unanimously approved proposing an amendment to address this problem. Association members will be asked to vote on the amendment as part of this year’s election.

The current language of Article VI.II.A reads:

“Elections for council seats shall be held every other year near the close of the year, for three of the nine Council seats.”

The proposed language is:

“Elections for council seats shall be held every other year near the close of the year for as many of the nine council seats as shall be vacated in the coming term.”

We’ll introduce this year’s candidates before voting begins and send Association members complete information about the candidates, the proposed bylaw amendment, and how to vote.
